Mahjong is a game typically enjoyed amongst loved ones, but for others, it's a dark obsession. Nangou is in over his head, racking up a staggering debt of over three million yen as a result of his compulsive gambling. As a last-ditch effort to clear his name, he bets his life on a game of mahjong with the mafia, only to find that he's out of his league and inching closer to his demise.
In a stroke of fate, Shigeru Akagi stumbles upon the game parlor while fleeing from the law. With nothing to lose, Nangou passes the baton to Akagi, imparting a few of the game's principles before surrendering fully. The mafia scoffs as Akagi takes his seat at the table, but their laughter quickly fades when they realize they're up against a prodigy: a fearless, death-defying gambler with an aura of legend.
