In the Edo period, Japan was attacked by extraterrestrial beings called the "Amanto" which overwhelmed the samurai's efforts to repel them. The Shogun conceded defeat, leading to an uneasy arrangement between the ruling class and the invaders. The outcome of this pact was a nationwide ban on swords and the decline of the samurai way of life.
Despite this, Gintoki Sakata, a samurai who clings to his principles, continues to wield his wooden sword. He makes a living by taking on odd jobs in the city alongside his self-proclaimed pupil Shinpachi Shimura, the tough alien Kagura, and their pet dog Sadaharu. The group runs a business called Yorozuya, and their daily activities often lead to hilarious mishaps.
This series also includes a four one-shot manga volumes entitled "Dandelion," "Shirokuro" (Black and White), "13," and "Bankara-san ga Tooru."
