Haruo Yaguchi is a master of arcade gaming, but beyond his reputation as a pro gamer, he's just a regular sixth grader with a dull life. He's not great at academics, sports, or socializing, but he has a knack for video games. Haruo would rather spend endless hours at the local arcade perfecting his gaming skills than focus on anything else.
One day, Haruo faces his match in the form of a classmate named Akira Oono. Akira is the complete opposite of Haruo - she has top grades, is adored by everyone, and comes from a wealthy background. Despite this, she manages to achieve an incredible 29-game winning streak and even defeats Haruo seven times in a row. Determined to end her dominance, Haruo challenges Akira to a game of Street Fighter 2 and resorts to sneaky tactics which upset the reserved girl. This unexpected altercation marks the beginning of a peculiar and tumultuous relationship between the two competitive gamers.
