Maki, a soon-to-be freshman, is preparing to attend Shirotou High School where she intends to play on either the girl's or boy's basketball team, both highly regarded. While shopping for new shoes the day before school starts, she becomes interested in a store employee who happens to be on the boy's team. Although the worker suggests a suitable pair of shoes, his demeanor changes when Maki reveals she will be playing on the girl's team. He instructs her not to associate with him if they cross paths at school, leaving Maki confused about the reason for his sudden change in attitude.
